Motion Furniture

At Smith Brothers, we know that motion furniture goes way beyond simply taking a stationary piece and attaching some hinges.

In fact, we have two very important rules when designing motion furniture:

Rule #1: We don't trade stability for moving parts

We've gone to great lengths to make sure that our motion furniture is as solid and dependable as our stationary pieces. In fact, we've even surpassed accepted industry standards, designing our own hardware in some cases rather than using the same parts as everyone else.

All of our motion furniture goes through an intensive quality assurance process, so we can be sure that when it finds a home in your living room, it won't creak, wobble, or go crooked.

And of course, our motion furniture adheres to the same construction standards as our stationary furniture: all-hardwood frames, attached legs, NoSag® springs in the backs and coil springs in the seats.

Rule #2: We don't sacrifice style for comfort

Have you ever noticed that motion furniture—recliners in particular—have a very... distinctive look?

Lumps and bumps are typical of many recliners

Lumps, bumps, and oversized padding are typical of a many recliners

It turns out there are reasons for all those lumps, lines, and other "features" that make comfortable motion furniture so uniquely unattractive. For example:

  • It needs a taller back in order to provide enough headrest support when it's laying down.
  • There has to be enough extra space in the upholstery for the piece to expand and contract.
  • The furniture has joints, handles, and metal hardware that allow it to move.

Many furniture manufacturers either disregard these rules, making furniture that is uncomfortable, or adhere to them so strictly that the furniture ends up with extra padding and seams to camoflage the unsightly parts—in other words, hiding the ugliness in plain sight.

At Smith Brothers, we consider both style and comfort to be high priorities, so we are careful to design functional, comfortable motion furniture that looks as beautiful as our stationary furniture.
